18 & IN LOVE : GOING TO UNIVERSITY (part 1)

Authored by: Edith Mukyala (Uganda, East Africa)

At last, I was out of my parents’ house! I was entirely free, free from rules and restrictions. I waved goodbye to my entire family. I could feel tears cloud my eyes, I sneezed to hold them back. Somehow, I always cried on my first day back at school. But now I was going to university, 18 years old…old enough to be independent, but still mummy’s little girl, crying on the first day to campus.

Once at the university (hostel), I went upstairs to my room. My family had come along and helped me unpack all my stuff and put my room in order. I decided to take a nap after the long day when the phone rang. It was mum. “Paula? Should we come back get you, am sure you’re really scared since your roommate hasn’t yet arrived?” I assured her I was perfectly fine as I tried hard to make my voice as firm as possible. “My mum is my world, my rock!” I thought to myself. But I had to get it together once we had said our goodbyes.photo-1552413538-566f46b64b92

2 hours later, I woke up feeling refreshed. He called me!!!! He called me!!!!! I was excited! Back then, he was the love of my life, my knight in shining armour, my prince charming! I thought I would be a fool if I chose another man over him. I mean, Mark was perfect in my eyes, he was mine and I was his.

“Honey, we need to meet for dinner and you also need to see my house,” he said. We had dated throughout my A’ Levels but I had never been to his place. Phone calls had been our strongest way of communication. My parents were very strict and never let me out of their sight so seeing him had been almost impossible. But now that I was finally free, I could meet the “love of my life” anytime I wished.

In an hour I was all dressed up and ready to go!!!! Ready for my first date, but not ready for my heart to be broken….
